Tutor Tips and Volunteer Opportunities

HELPING STUDENTS STUDY FOR THE GED

Facing the challenge of taking the GED test can be daunting. You can help your student do their best by:

Studying for one section of the test at a time. Have your student choose the subject she feels the most confident about. Give practice tests often and encourage your student to take the official test for this subject when they are scoring above 90% on the practice tests.

Teaching test-taking tricks. Breathing exercises and creative visualization are two ways to get your students to relax before and during the test. Teach your students to stay calm and to maintain an "it's not the end of the world" attitude.

Being open and supportive. You and your student have the opportunity to form a unique bond of support. Your tutoring sessions can be a safe haven, where your student can feel safe and secure. Remember to listen to your student's concerns, even if they are not directly related to the topic at hand.

BECOMING A TUTOR

Becoming a tutor is easy, you need a sincere desire to help others. Tutor training is accomplished in a mere fifteen hours by viewing DVDs and discussing each of the five DVDs with Marilyn. She will walk you through the process in an unassuming manner. Once you have finished the training, you will be matched with a student in your area.
