Susquehanna County Family Literacy Program

What is the Family Literacy Program?

The Family Literacy Program combines adult education and parenting skills training with early childhood education. The goal of the program is to break the cycle of illiteracy and parents are supported as the first teachers of their children. The program works with the family as a unit as well as individually, including:

Who Should Participate?

Participants include children, parents, single parents, or other close family members. The term parents refers to anyone fulfilling the responsibilities usually associated with the parent of a child over a sustained period of time.

Why Become Involved?

Many research studies have linked a child’s motivation to succeed in school with the educational achievement of their parents. Parental involvement in their child’s school, influences student achievement, attendance, motivation, self concept, and behavior. Parents who read to their children, have books in their home, exhibit a positive attitude toward school, and establish high achievement goals for their children tend to have higher achievers than parents who do not.

Is the Program Right for Me?

Families:

  • Must live in Susquehanna County
  • Need at least one adult or caregiver of child(ren)
  • Need at least one child between the ages of birth and 8 years old
  • Are required to participate in all 4 components of the program
  • Must register before attending

All services are free and confidential and Family Literacy involvement meets TANF requirements. Transportation and childcare will be available on an as needed basis.
