Susquehanna County Family Community CentersWhat is the Family Community Center?The Family Community Center combines adult education and parenting skills training with early childhood education. The goal of the program is to break the cycle of illiteracy and parents are supported as the first teachers of their children. The program works with the family as a unit as well as individually, including: Who Should Participate?Participants include children, parents, single parents, or other close family members. The term parents refers to anyone fulfilling the responsibilities usually associated with the parent of a child over a sustained period of time. Why Become Involved?Many research studies have linked a child’s motivation to succeed in school with the educational achievement of their parents. Parental involvement in their child’s school, influences student achievement, attendance, motivation, self concept, and behavior. Parents who read to their children, have books in their home, exhibit a positive attitude toward school, and establish high achievement goals for their children tend to have higher achievers than parents who do not. All services are free and confidential and Family Center involvement meets TANF requirements.
