Susquehanna County Literacy Program
|

Welcome to the Susquehanna County Literacy Program's Homepage. The Literacy Program serves anyone from birth on in need of reading, math, family, GED preparation, and life skills. The mission of the Susquehanna County Literacy Program is to provide life skills, education, and promote life long learning to residents of Susquehanna County.
The Susquehanna County Literacy Program is free and confidential. We have been serving the community since 1982. Through the use of volunteer tutors and paid instructors we offer help to those in need of these services through either one-on-one instruction or in classroom settings.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new program that allows community members and friends to support the Susquehanna County Literacy Program by making online purchases through the PANO mall, a Web site created in conjunction with PANO, Fundlink, LLC, and over 1,300 major retailers.
Popular consumer and business merchants such as Target®, Macy’s®, Best Buy®, Dell®, and Staples®, and web based giants such as Expedia®, along with 1,300 other retailers have joined in helping local hospitals and health care facilities by donating a portion of their online proceeds. You shop, and they give a donation!
The PANO mall works like any other online shopping vehicle except now the Susquehanna County Literacy Program benefits from the experience. After entering the PANO mall and selecting an online retailer to visit, you will be asked to designate Susquehanna County Literacy Program as the organization that will benefit from your shopping experience. Once the designation is made, you will be sent directly to the retailer of your choice to start shopping. Two More Free Lectures
Bringing the Family Together Through Story
Wednesday, July 23rd, 6:30pm
The Supreme Court: In Times of Crisis
Wednesday, August 20th, 6:30pm
The Montrose Theater (18 Public Ave) has generously offered its facilities to allow three local organizations, joining together, to present a free lecture series led by Commonwealth Speakers (the second and third are July 23rd and August 20th, at 6:30pm). The Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library Association, the Susquehanna County Literacy Program, and the Susquehanna County League of Women Voters each successfully requested a speaker from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. All presentations are free and open to the public.
Mark your calendars for the second in the series, "Bringing the Family Together Through Story," on Wednesday, July 23rd (6:30pm). Commonwealth Speaker and storyteller Jan Kinney will lead an interactive presentation which will help you tell your own family stories! The Susquehanna County Literacy Program will sponsor this event. Stories are passed down through the generations and give family members a sense of history, unity, and belonging.
On August 20th, "The Supreme Court: In Times of Crisis" will be the final lecture, sponsored by the Susquehanna County League of Women Voters. Commonwealth Speaker Robert Langran, Professor of Poli/Sci at Villanova University, will discuss the role the United States Supreme Court has played in times of crisis, including the Civil War, WWI & WWII, the Cold War, and the struggle against terrorism.
"The Boys in Blue" by Commonwealth Speaker Richard Sauers, historian and author, was held on Tuesday, June 24th, and drew a crowd of almost 70 people!
Far too often, books present Union Civil War soldiers as cardboard cutouts who fought the enemy and won the war. Few books portray common soldiers as they actually lived and died. Sauers examined the common soldiers in blue and how they coped with a war in which more than 600,000 men died. Many of the soldiers were teenagers who learned to cope with army life by playing practical jokes, getting into trouble and, at times, harassing civilians. This often humorous presentation showed youthful soldiers in a new light.
These presentations are a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The Pennsylvania Humanities County, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a lifetime of learning. In addition to the Commonwealth Speakers program, PHC offers grants which support humanities programs centered in the arts, history, literature, and other humanities field. PHC's packaged book discussion program for public libraries, Read About It! also serves as a resource for residents of Pennsylvania. For more information visit http://www.pahumanities.org.
